Position Description

The Marketing & Communications Director is a special volunteer position on Help Educate’s Board of Directors. S/he will lead and execute Help Educate’s marketing and communication activities, including managing Help Educate’s website, social media accounts, newsletters, and fundraising communications. S/he will coordinate with and support the Board of Directors with the promotion of the organization, its students, and fundraising events. Additionally, s/he will engage in communication and coordination with Nicaraguan partners to collect information for our communications campaigns. A two-year commitment is expected, with an anticipated workload of 10-15 hours per month, with workload variation according to business cycles. This is a volunteer, unpaid position, but can provide invaluable experience and leadership opportunities in an all-volunteer international development 501(c)(3) non-profit operating in Nicaragua for more than 13 years. Opportunity to participate in annual Help Educate sponsored site visits in Nicaragua for communications purposes, including meetings with our local Nicaraguan selection committees, our in-country staff, and with our scholarship recipients to collect photos and stories. 

Ideal Candidate 

Help Educate seeks a highly motivated individual with experience in marketing or communications, particularly graphic design, social media, and website management (WordPress and SEO experience preferred). Strong, persuasive writing skills for social impact messaging is critical. Ideal candidate is a self-starter who works with a high level of autonomy, is highly organized, and has a vision for improving Help Educate as an organization. Spanish proficiency, international development, or nonprofit experience is preferred. Help Educate is a virtual organization, so location is flexible.

 Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead Help Educate’s communications strategy
    • Develop and publish quarterly newsletters via Mail Chimp emails
    • Liaise with fellow Board Members to promote fundraising events and campaigns
    • Discover and pursue opportunities to disseminate message, such as press releases or guest blogs
  • Manage and update website and online presence
    • Maintain and regularly update the WordPress website www.helpeducate.org
    • Refresh website with updated content and current photos
    • Refresh and maintain externally facing Help Educate accounts, such as: LinkedIn, nonprofit networking groups, Guidestar, Idealist
    • Ensure website security, firewall protection, hosting, and SEO 
  • Create and manage content on Social Media
    • Create posts on Facebook and instagram
    • Coordinate with operations team to obtain fresh, current information and photos
    • Potential to collaborate with communication interns or staff in Nicaragua 
  • Lead marketing and communication for development efforts
    • Lead branding and messaging for fundraising and communications through collaboration with Development Director on Board of Directors
    • Support and promote fundraising events and campaigns through communications materials, emarketing, registration process, website updates, and social media
    • Lead and create Annual Report, obtaining and organizing content from BoD and Management Team
    • Creating marketing and fundraising documents as needed, such as brochures, event flyers, annual holiday postcard mailing, one-pagers, and branded items
    • Set up and run online auctions
  • Participate as a key member of Help Educate’s Board of Directors
    • Attend and prepare updates for quarterly Board of Directors meetings 
    • Actively collaborate with Development Director and other board members
    • Attend annual meeting and event (if possible), often in Washington D.C. 
    • Serve as an active leader and voice for Help Educate’s mission
    • Actively support development efforts
